10 Facts about Nicaragua

1) Nicaragua is located in Central America with the Caribbean Sea on the East, the Pacific Ocean on the West and Costa Rica on the South. Its total area is 130,668 sq. and is the largest country in Central America.

2) Nicaragua is made up of two words Nicarao and agua. It is believed that the Nicarao were the Indian tribe who occupied the shores of Lake Nicaragua and Agua is the Spanish word for water.

3) Managua is the capital of Nicaragua but the city of Granada is the most popular in Nicaragua and attracts a large number of tourists.

4) The main language that is spoken in Nicaragua is Spanish although natives living on the eastern coast speak Miskito, Sumo, Rama, and English Creole.

5) The famous art of Nicaragua is Literature Poetry. Works by Nicaraguan poets, fiction writers and essayists hold eminent place in world literature and arts.

6) In Nicaragua, Mexican style of music is quite famous which is characterized by guitars and marimbas. Tonada-style music and reggae music is also popular in Nicaragua.

7) Baseball is the most popular sport in Nicaragua. It is also their national sport.

8) Corn is the main ingredient of Nicaraguan food. It is found in cakes, desserts, and even drinks. A typical Nicaraguan meal comprises of eggs or meat, beans, rice, salads, tortillas and fruit.

9) September 15 is celebrated as the Independence Day in Nicaragua. This day marks Nicaragua's independence from Spain in 1821.

    
10) A variety of regional and international airlines serve Nicaragua. Nicaragua is known for eco-tourism and travel. In addition, the country offers adventure and sports activities, including surfing, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, diving, and volcano sand-boarding.

  1. Before you leave for the holidays, make sure that you turn off your air conditioning unit, hot water heater, and other electric appliances like TV, coffee making machine, microwave, and computer to prevent any wastage of energy.
  1. Look out for eco-friendly holiday destinations. There are many holiday destinations that are environmentally friendly. These destinations support and promote sustainable tourism.
  1. To reduce the impact of auto emissions, travel to your eco friendly holiday destination by bus or train. When at the holiday destination, use eco friendly car hire services or better, share cabs. Try to walk down to local markets and nearby attractions to reduce the pollution caused by vehicles.
  1. Re-use towels and bed sheets when staying at a hotel. It results in significant energy saving.
  1. Water is a very precious resource. Save it by having shorter showers and turning off the taps when not in use.
